Impressively expansive and fun to build

This was a very fun robot kit to construct with very clear instructions. The great thing about it is it is wonderful for all levels from those who just want a very advanced remote controlled robot to those who want to visually create their own block commands to even those who want to really dig in and work with Python or C using true Raspberry Pi and/or Arduino C environments. The heart of the mBot Mega is the 2560 which is a very top of the line Arduino Controller. The mBot Mega has extensive connectivity for interfacing with numerous add ons and it even includes a direct Raspberry Pi interface if you want to take it to the next level (You can switch between firmwares on the Mega to either use the native Arduino controller/environment or interface and use a Raspberry). If you are interested in Robotics or even an intermediate/advanced Roboticist, the mBot Mega has so much flexibility and expand-ability, you will be delighted with what you find.I will be tinkering with this mBot Mega for quite some time both with Arduino C and interfacing my Raspberry Pi 4 to it.I added some pictures so you can see it compared side by side with Makebot's mBot Neo too for comparison.Excellent! 5/5

To Be Or Bot To Be
By ReviewToaKill on July 19, 2021
I got this, as I'm already a fan of build kits, and I thought it might be fun to do with the kids. It's essentially a robotic kit. It's perfect as a STEM device to help teach coding. You put it together (which is simple - took me a casual hour) but keep these things in mind: don't overtighten items (particularly on the motors and the plastic standoffs), especially the wheels. These are side-specific. I got lucky and got that right the first time. It would also have been easier if they had used red, black, and yellow GPIO cables. They used a rainbow of cables, which made it maybe more confusing than necessary than going with red, black, and yellow GPIO cables. I don't know how sensitive the components are but I triple-checked everything. Otherwise, I had a great deal of fun putting it together. (A raspberry pi is not required. This would basically put a dedicated PC directly connected to the included board that controls the project.)
The firmware on the device was actually incorrect. The iPhone app thought this was a different robot. I fixed this by loading the mBlock software, hardwiring with the included cable, and following the instructions on the website on how to re-flash the firmware. Being in IT, this wasn't a big deal to me, but might be frustrating to those not in the field. This means they likely programmed the chip for something else, and it ended up in this product by mistake. That's a pretty big oopsie. Once that was fixed, I could connect the app and drive it around as intended.
The booklet was sufficient in telling you how to put it together but from there you're kind of on your own. The mBlock software can connect to the robot via USB cable, allowing you to take command blocks lego style and combine them into programs for the robot to run, very similar to SCRATCH.
The wheels are pretty cool, and allow the bot to move sideways. That's a fun feature. Once I had it built my brain caught fire with ideas to expand upon the build. The mBlock software is web-based, so I'll probably add a Pi Micro W with a camera; with the Chrome browser on a Raspberry Pi Micro, I'll use the mBlock app and allow my kids to play with this remotely with a remote desktop maybe using VNC. I will want the battery pack for the servos to be rechargeable...maybe make it a greeter assistant for our lobby...I fall down rabbit holes all the time.
This is perhaps my first true robot with programmable sensors and motors. This is more intermediate than for beginners maybe, and it should have worked out of the box with the firmware.
Still, I do like the project. Philosophically, the biggest lesson in robotics and programming is likely the ability to work around issues as they are presented.
